Preparing Your Home for Extended Travel: Checklist and Tips

A cozy, well-maintained home with neatly trimmed hedges, a manicured lawn, and a welcoming front porch adorned with potted plants, conveying a sense of security and readiness for extended travel.

Whether you’re embarking on a month-long adventure or an extended business trip, preparing your home before you leave is crucial. A well-prepared home ensures peace of mind, allowing you to fully enjoy your travels. Here’s a comprehensive checklist and some essential tips to get your home travel-ready.

1. Security Measures

  • Install Timers on Lights: Use programmable timers to turn lights on and off at various times to give the appearance of occupancy.
  • Lock All Doors and Windows: Double-check all entry points, including garage doors and basement windows.
  • Notify Your Security Company: Inform them of your travel dates. Ensure your alarm system is working properly.
  • Hide Valuables: Store valuables in a safe or another secure location. Avoid leaving them in obvious places like nightstands or closets.
  • Hold Your Mail and Packages: Request the post office to hold your mail or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it. This prevents a buildup that signals your absence.

2. Utility Management

  • Adjust the Thermostat: Set your thermostat to an energy-saving mode. In winter, keep it warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing; in summer, set it high enough to conserve energy.
  • Unplug Electronics: Disconnect non-essential electronics to prevent power surges and reduce energy consumption.
  • Turn Off Water Supply: Shut off the main water supply to prevent leaks. If that’s not possible, turn off water to specific appliances like the washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Check Smoke Alarms: Ensure all smoke detectors are functioning properly. Replace batteries if needed.

3. Pet Care

  • Arrange for Pet Care: Book a pet sitter or arrange for your pet to stay with friends or at a boarding facility. Provide detailed care instructions.
  • Stock Up on Supplies: Ensure there’s enough food, litter, and other supplies to last the duration of your trip.

4. Home Maintenance

  • Clean the House: A clean home is pleasant to return to. Empty trash bins, clean the fridge, and do the laundry.
  • Tidy the Yard: Mow the lawn, trim hedges, and arrange for someone to maintain it if you’ll be gone for an extended period.
  • Inspect for Maintenance Issues: Fix any potential problems, such as leaks or faulty appliances, to avoid issues while you’re away.

5. Financial Preparations

  • Pay Bills in Advance: Ensure all bills are paid up or set to auto-pay to avoid late fees.
  • Inform Your Bank: Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to avoid any holds on your accounts due to suspicious activity.

6. Emergency Contacts

  • Leave a Key with a Trusted Person: Give a spare key to a reliable friend or neighbor who can check on your home if necessary.
  • Provide Contact Information: Leave your contact information and itinerary with someone you trust in case of emergencies.

7. Last-Minute Checklist

  • Empty the Trash: Take out all the trash to avoid coming home to unpleasant odors.
  • Check Appliances: Ensure all appliances are turned off, including the oven and stove.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or secure outdoor furniture and decorations to prevent damage from weather.

Bonus Tips

  • Consider Hiring a House Sitter: For peace of mind, hire a house sitter to stay at your home and take care of it.
  • Use Smart Home Devices: Invest in smart home technology that allows you to monitor and control aspects of your home remotely.
