Finding the best tools for working remotely on the road has been my passion for many years. I spend most of my life living in hotels and traveling and need to get creative on occasion to stay active with my many online businesses and side projects. As I talk with other bloggers, digital nomads, and wanderlusters I’ve seen an increasing trend of remote work. It’s important to have the right tools to maintain a high level of productivity and efficiency while traveling. Here are my 3 key points that have helped me be successful working remotely on the road in 2024.
1. Reliable Internet Access
Not all hotels are created equal and neither is their internet services they provide. Often times I find myself frustrated with slow internet speeds. Consider using a mobile hotspot from either your phone or a device like Solis or the soon to be mobile version of Starlink. If you are traveling abroad, consider international data plans and be cognizant of the high cost. One tactic I’ve used often is finding a cafe with internet and relaxing with an espresso using their internet for a bit. It’s quick and easy and gives you a bit of cultural exposure as well!
2. Essential Hardware and Productivity Software
I carry and HDMI cable with me wherever I go and plug my laptop into the hotel TV. This gives me a second monitor and also a great way to stream my favorite TV shows from back home in the comfort of my hotel room. In contrast, sometimes I use my iPad which is also an efficient way to use a second monitor. Regardless, Always bring noise canceling headphones as hotels can be distracting with noises from housekeepers and other guests, or if you are in a cafe as I mentioned before, it’s a good way to drown out the chaos around you. In addition, maximize your time with task management apps like Trello, Asana, or even Teams. I use TeuxDuex for my tasks and an app called Forest that is a Pomodoro timer to keep me on track. Lastly, make sure you are using Apple’s iCloud, Dropbox, or Box for document storage so that you don’t have to lug around seperate drives with you. Efficiency while traveling is a must.
3. Security and Privacy
I talked about VPN use in a previous blog. VPNs are virtual private networks that help keep your data safe and secure. It’s a must have and one of the best tools to have when working remotely. Furthermore, keep a good password manager for all those usernames and passwords so they are secure. I use Nordpass and it has worked wonders for me over the years as I travel. In addition, be aware of your devices. If you decide to leave your hotel room for a bit for lunch, make sure your laptop is off or in sleep mode. Don’t just leave it unattended thinking it will go to sleep eventually to power save. If someone comes in after you leave with it still on, you have given them access to all of your information.
Conclusion
Working remotely has become more popular now as so many people are traveling and working at the same time. Be creative with your wi-fi and don’t just rely on the hotel you’re staying at. Moreover, make sure you have the right equipment to maximize your workflow. Some bring iPads or Tablets to connect. Consider using them as a second monitor or just connecting to the TV like I do. In the meantime, keep your data secure by using a VPN and being conscientious about shutting your computer down if left unattended. What do you do when you travel?
